Armen Takhtajan is recognized as one of the world's leading experts on plant evolution. This book represents the culmination of nearly six decades of his research into the origins and classification of flowering plants. It builds upon his previous works, including Systema Magnoliophytorum (1987, in Russian) and Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants (1997, in English). The book classifies flowering plants into two major groups: class Magnoliopsida (Dicotyledons), which includes 8 subclasses, 126 orders, approximately 440 families, nearly 10,500 genera, and at least 195,000 species: and class Liliopsida (Monocotyledons), which consists of 4 subclasses, 31 orders, 120 families, over 3,000 genera, and around 65,000 species. It provides a comprehensive description of plant orders, along with detailed keys for identifying plant families, highlighting their distinguishing characteristics and differences.
