Forensic Science Laboratory Benchmarking: The FORESIGHT Manual provides a detailed, step-by-step guide on how laboratories can use FORESIGHT data to enhance their efficiency. The FORESIGHT Project, launched in 2008, is a business benchmarking initiative for forensic service providers that gathers and reports data, offering opportunities for process improvement through analysis, comparisons, and best practice evaluations. Over time, the program has expanded to include more than 200 forensic laboratories worldwide. FORESIGHT enables labs to enhance their core functions, leverage metrics, and ultimately improve their operations for the public benefit, all while working within their often limited and fixed budgets. Forensic labs face the persistent issue of case backlogs—cases that are submitted but remain unprocessed—leading to inefficiencies, delays, and dissatisfaction among agencies awaiting timely results. Even if a lab were to clear its backlog, the underlying inefficient processes that caused the backlog would still exist, resulting in the inevitable creation of a new backlog.
